What ‘IT’ taught me

I hate the idea of doing things by myself , whether it be eating out at a restaurant or going to the cinema, I hate it. You could say that it is up there on my list of ‘biggest fears’ accompanied with spiders and ladybirds (yes ladybirds).

However, ‘IT’ was a film that I vouched to see… even if I had to go on my own. I didn’t have much of a choice anyway, considering that everyone in my friendship group hate thriller and horror films. It took me around 3 weeks to finally get around to watch ‘IT’ and let me tell you, it was definitely worth the wait and anxiety. (I’ll try not to spoil anything).

For a film so dark in nature, the script writers managed to insert humorous scenes which were executed perfectly by the cast, evidently making the not so bearable scenes more bearable. This, I thought, oddly reflected my current outlook on life. With all the natural disasters and terrorist attacks going on, the world we live in today seems to be such a dark place, making it increasingly difficult to have a positive outlook and mind frame. I’d like to think that our ‘light relief’ comes in the form of TV programmes and music, a modern day form of what can be referred to as bread and circuses, a tool used to temporarily relive and distance ourselves from the harsh reality.

The whole film circulated around the idea of fear & the detrimental effects it can have on an individuals life as well as those around them. From this, I drew to the conclusion that fear can more often than not, be regarded as a taught phenomenon, which we should not give power over our lives. In order to live our life to the fullest, we should confront our fears and have fun whilst we do it. With this being said, from this day on I am going to embrace being a part time loner, cinema trips and tables for one included. Not too sure about the confrontation on spiders and ladybirds though.
